Councillor Vanessa Churchman – Havenstreet, Ashey and Haylands Ward
I was fortunate to have delivered my ‘Local’ councillor newsletter in my ward just before the lock-down. This gave an outline of things that had recently happened, including highlighting the work being done by Wightfibre to bring the most up-to-date broadband to the Island. It also advertised the garden waste kerbside collection which hopefully was taken up by more residents and has been immensely useful in our current situation.
I hope that I have encouraged more people to grow their own fruit and vegetables. Home grown is rewarding, extremely tasty to eat and you know what has gone into the soil.
The resurfacing of Rosemary Lane was carried out successfully and has improved both walking for the schoolchildren who use it and access for the residents. A brilliant team effort by residents, Council officers and myself.
Just before Christmas I took over as Chair of Governors at Haylands Primary School as our existing Chair had resigned. The school has continued to flourish under our very capable Head Teacher and since the pandemic has proved herself as an efficient organiser and leader; the school has stayed open throughout the current crisis.
For the coming year I have to resolve the problem in Corbett Road where, because of the bad road surface and overhanging trees, Island Waste had refused to make rubbish collections. However, things are in progress and it is a matter of waiting for the current situation to ease before work can start on the road.
The successful coffee mornings, where I was able to meet and talk to constituents at the UR Church, had to be terminated but hopefully they will start again in the Autumn.
