Annual Report

Councillor Jonathan Bacon – Brading and St Helens Ward

I have remained as a Cabinet Member during the last Council Year. During the year the Leader reshuffled her Cabinet. As part of the reshuffle, I  handed over responsibility for Waste to Councillor Karen Lucioni but took on a new specific Portfolio responsibility for Climate Change and related issues. This is the first time that the Isle of Wight Council has had a specific Cabinet Role for this area and reflects the importance the issue has, both for the Council and everyone on the Island.

I also oversee the Council’s role in supporting and maintaining the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere status. For both the Biosphere and the Council’s Climate Change Strategy we now have autonomous Steering Committees which feed directly into decision making within the Council. These bodies will help guide the Council in recognising and supporting the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in our actions and decision making processes, and thereby support residents and the environment we all live in to achieve the aims set out therein.

By the time this report is published I hope that we will have at last made our formal application for International Dark Sky Status. The process had been held up due to an internal reorganisation at the International Dark Skies Association in the USA. I am now hopeful we should be able to get a result by the end of this year.

Otherwise much of my time has been taken up overseeing issues in relation to Coastal Protection. We have seen serious damage to our coastal defences, particularly in Ventnor, due to our increasingly volatile weather, but we  have developed a strong relationship with the Environment Agency which will help, both in addressing such damage and also pursuing various Coastal Protection projects around the Island.

In my Ward I am still a member of Brading Town Council and Chair of St Helens Parish Council. These roles further help me to keep in touch with the residents of both parishes and in my aim to support them with equal regard to the work I undertake as a Cabinet Member.
