Annual Report April 2023

Councillor Julie Jones-Evans - Newport Central

Cabinet  Member  for  Levelling Up, Regeneration, Business Development and  Tourism

A major focus this year has been bringing forward several government-funded projects and preparing others for potential applications.

Building 41 at Northwood, saw the last of EU funding invested into an unused building and transformed into a modern and welcoming co-working and office space, where business can connect and receive direct business support.

Venture Quays in East Cowes is part way through the Levelling-Up round 1 project, we are on schedule and staying within budget.

UK Shared Prosperity allocation, although much less than expected, is being utilised to deliver our place-based regeneration programme across the island. Rural England Shared Prosperity Fund is being used to create more business and creative sector spaces, again in unused buildings.

The High Street Heritage Action Zone is entering its final year and we will soon see improvements to buildings and public realm in Newport and Ryde.

Focus on the creative sector is proving fruitful and at Newport Harbour we have appointed architects to move the Cultural Centre to the next stage of feasibility. The Masterplan for the whole Harbour is coming to the Council for approval in the next few months.

Shaping Newport partnership has gone from strength to strength and the highlight of the year was six months of hard work that culminated in the day of celebration for  the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which saw thousands of people in Newport enjoying a spectacle, free entertainment and activities.

I was disappointed that the project in Scarrots Lane did not go forward due to difficulties with Highways issues. Mill Street intervention has also stalled and I will be picking this up again.  The issue of a Post Office for Newport is still unresolved and I continue to work with the PO to resolve.
