Annual Report 2020
Councillor Julie Jones-Evans – Newport Central Ward
This year a big focus has been on the Shaping Newport partnership with IW Council, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and Newport Business Association. A lot of energy went into 2 grant applications, Future High Street and High Street Historic Action Zone. We were successful with the HSHAZ and have drawn at least £1m of investment into the town centre. This will cover improvement to public realm - seating, planting, signage etc; People First Zone - creating a better pedestrian environment; Design Code for shop fronts; grants for shop front improvements; releasing unused upper floor for residential, business or makers spaces; feasibility study for key buildings including the Guildhall; archaeological study to unearth more of Newport’s story; Cultural Programme - a series of events and publications.
Residents Parking Zone surveys and votes have been carried out in various locations in Newport Central and Caesars Road, Field Place and Clarence Road had successful ballots to create new parking zones which they have been waiting for many years. This was made possible with Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council funding a specific post to carry out the work.
This year my focus will be delivering the HSHAZ and more digital engagement with residents.
