I was elected to represent Ventnor West on the Isle of Wight Council this year. My main reason for standing for election was that I felt that people across the island deserved a common sense approach and some professionalism in the way that they are represented and in the way the elected council was run.
I run and own an island based cyber and information security business (ESID Consulting), helping companies protect their most sensitive information and that of their clients. I am also a parent and want the best chance for my children on this beautiful island of ours, but to do that we need a decent educational system and an environment that encourages business. We already have some fantastic firms here and as a council we need to foster and encourage those businesses as much as we can. We also want to attract other businesses here and encourage further investment, to provide highly skilled and well-paid jobs. Business can only succeed however if it has a highly skilled and motivated workforce, and that's where education comes in.
The Island Free School, where I am proud to be a Governor, provides a first-class education and fantastic pastoral care. Its students are achieving great things! and I can't praise its staff and management highly enough. However, all of the island’s schools need to do the same, and I will work hard with the rest of the team to help make sure that these other schools can provide the best education that can for their children.
I am also very pleased to have been given a position as a member of the Cabinet, responsible for Community Safety and Public Protection. This role fits perfectly with my experience and expertise as a former Police officer in the Metropolitan Police Service, where I served for 18 years. That background means that I can hold officers to account, but also provide qualified support where required. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead!
I served for 18
years as an Investigator and Detective for Scotland Yard,
investigating serious and organised crime and misconduct at the
highest levels. I established the e-Discovery and Insider Threat
Management role for the Professional Standards Hi-Tech Crime Unit
of the Metropolitan Police Service, for all Anti-Corruption and
As a consultant I became the Head of Digital Forensics and Intelligence Laboratories at the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) after leading on the creation of the new laboratories after the merger of the Office of Fair Trading with the UK Competition Commission.
Since leaving the police I have run my own business (ESID Consulting) specialising in Insider Threat Management, Information / Cyber Security and Business Continuity.
I am also a founder member of the South East Cyber Security Cluster. The Cross-Sector Safety and Security Communications (CSSC) Southern Region and a member of the Council of International Investigators (CII).
Annual Report 2020
Councillor Gary Peace – Ventnor West Ward
Over the last year there have been a wide range of events and challenges at a local level. And as with everything else, this year COVID-19 has overtaken events.
One notable recent issue I have been involved in, was the “lockdown” closure of Ventnor Post Office. Residents were desperate for the continuation of the service and I led the campaign to persuade the owners to reopen and to support the community.
A post office is rightly an essential service and was desperately needed by vulnerable residents, those who could not travel and all those who need banking services.
We’ve also had the collapse of Belgrave Road. I have been involved from day one in seeking to ensure the safety of those living near it and its reinstatement. I’ve also made sure that those effected are being communicated with on a regular basis.
I’ve also brought to the Island (and Ventnor) the latest hi-profile event called, “LeBlanq” a cycling tour and gastronomic event that will publicise the very best of what the whole island has to offer, using local chefs, produce and iconic locations. https://www.leblanq.com/
In January I was very pleased to be invited back onto Cabinet, after having to step away for a year due to personal reasons. I have picked up my old portfolio of Community Safety, now expanded to include Digital Transformation. This means that I can now use my expertise to directly influence the “digital island” vision - a programme that is and will deliver greater opportunities and benefits to residents and enable this island to market itself as a world leader in the digital economy.
My portfolio also means that I now sit on the newly formed Local Outbreak Engagement Board. That will lead on any local response to further outbreaks of COVID19.
