Councillor Barry Abraham – Wootton Bridge Ward
Over the last year I have remained the Cabinet Member for Planning and Housing. Providing low cost housing is one of the key objectives of the council but it is proving to be one of the hardest objectives to fulfil. The council is trying to start a housing company to deliver what private developers cannot, but is not moving forward as I had first hoped and small council owned land sites with planning permission is proving hard to develop because of land issues and the cost making them unaffordable.
Because of the covid19 pandemic, the local plan review has been halted for further work to be undertaken and look and see what effect the pandemic is likely to have on such things as town centres and with more people working at home, what impact that will have on the needs of communities.
The pandemic has changed the way the council has worked. The Cabinet team met via Microsoft teams three times a week to keep on top of the changing circumstances, the council’s finances certainly have taken a hammering and despite government money over the next few months, there will be some difficult decisions to make.
I really must give my thanks to the council staff for the wonderful way they have worked under pressure and went over and above their usual job specs. I won’t pick out any person or area in particular, just a big thank you.
